Case Study

Smart Wearable Feasibility

Problem

A global MedTech organization was exploring next-generation smart wearable solutions with integrated sensor and communication functionality. The program required a technical and cost feasibility investigation to determine whether embedded sensors, wireless communication, and thin-film electronics could be effectively integrated.

The challenge was to balance functionality, manufacturability, and cost targets across multiple design configurations while maintaining feasibility for large-scale production.

Solution

G8Way Services was engaged to provide engineering leadership and technical analysis. The G8Way team conducted a structured feasibility study that included:

  • Evaluating operational theory and system architecture for sensor integration, microcontrollers, and wireless communication.
  • Assessing power requirements, duty cycles, and battery technologies to validate device usability over expected wear times.
  • Developing three design configurations (low, medium, and high cost) with associated cost-of-goods estimates and performance trade-offs.
  • Exploring printed strain and force sensors as cost-effective alternatives, including engagement with external vendors to validate scalability and manufacturability.
  • Providing recommendations on optimal configurations and next steps for prototyping and proof-of-concept builds.
Results

The feasibility investigation confirmed that development of a smart wearable device was well within reach, with the mid-tier configuration recommended as the best balance of cost and performance. By leveraging G8Way’s subject matter expertise, the customer gained:

  • Clear guidance on system design trade-offs across configurations.
  • Validated approaches for low-power operation and sensor integration.
  • A defined path toward rapid prototyping and vendor collaboration for printed sensors and thin-film batteries.

The study positioned the customer to move confidently into prototyping and development, reducing risk while accelerating the path to next-generation wearable innovation.
